Context of Judges 10:4
2He judged Israel for 23 years, then died and was buried in Shamir. 3After him Jair the Gileadite arose, and judged Israel for 23 years. He had 30 sons who rode on 30 donkeys and had 30 towns in the land of Gilead, which are called Jair’s Villages to this day. 5Then Jair died and was buried in Kamon. 6Then Bnei-Yisrael again did what was evil in Adonai’s eyes. They worshipped the Baalim, the Ashtaroth, gods of Aram, gods of Zidon, gods of Moab, gods of the children of Ammon and gods of the Philistines. They abandoned Adonai and did not worship Him.

Commentaries on Judges 10:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4He had thirty sons, etc. - It appears that there was both peace and prosperity during the time that Jair governed Israel; he had, it seems, provided for his family, and given a village to each of his thirty sons; which were, in consequence, called Havoth Jair or the villages of Jair. Their riding on thirty ass colts seems to intimate that they were persons of consideration, and kept up a certain dignity in their different departments.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-4Jair was likely a descendant of an earlier Jair from the tribe of Manasseh (see Numbers 32:41; Deuteronomy 3:14; compare 1 Kings 4:13). The Towns of Jair, which Jair and his sons controlled, were conquered by the earlier Jair.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts--This is a characteristic trait of Eastern manners in those early times; and the grant of a village to each of his thirty sons was a striking proof of his extensive possessions. His having thirty sons is no conclusive evidence that he had more than one wife, much less that he had more than one at a time. There are instances, in this country, of men having as many children by two successive wives.Read the comment
