Context of Judges 10:4
2Tola led Israel for 23 years. Then he died and they buried him in Shamir. 3After Tola, Jair of Gilead became Israel's leader. He led Israel for 22 years. He had 30 sons. They rode on 30 donkeys and they ruled 30 towns in Gilead. These towns are still called Havvoth-Jair (Jair's villages). 5Then Jair died and they buried him in Kamon. 6The Israelites again did things that the Lord saw were evil. They worshipped idols of Baal and Ashtoreth. They also worshipped the gods of Syria, Sidon and Moab, as well as the gods of the Ammonites and the Philistines. They turned away from the Lord and they did not serve him any more.

Commentaries on Judges 10:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4He had thirty sons, etc. - It appears that there was both peace and prosperity during the time that Jair governed Israel; he had, it seems, provided for his family, and given a village to each of his thirty sons; which were, in consequence, called Havoth Jair or the villages of Jair. Their riding on thirty ass colts seems to intimate that they were persons of consideration, and kept up a certain dignity in their different departments.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-4Jair was likely a descendant of an earlier Jair from the tribe of Manasseh (see Numbers 32:41; Deuteronomy 3:14; compare 1 Kings 4:13). The Towns of Jair, which Jair and his sons controlled, were conquered by the earlier Jair.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts--This is a characteristic trait of Eastern manners in those early times; and the grant of a village to each of his thirty sons was a striking proof of his extensive possessions. His having thirty sons is no conclusive evidence that he had more than one wife, much less that he had more than one at a time. There are instances, in this country, of men having as many children by two successive wives.Read the comment
