Context of Joshua 7:18
16So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel forward by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 17Then he brought forward the clans of Judah, and He took the family of the Zerahites. Then he brought forward his household man by man, and Achan son of Carmi son of Zabdi son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah was taken. 19So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory now to Adonai, God of Israel, and give praise to Him, and confess to me now what you have done—hide nothing from me.” 20Achan responded to Joshua and said: “It’s true! - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-26Verses 16-26 See the folly of those that promise themselves secrecy in sin. The righteous God has many ways of bringing to light the hidden works of darkness. See also, how much it is our concern, when God is contending with us, to find out the cause that troubles us. We must pray with holy Job, Lord, show me wherefore thou contendest with me. Achan's sin began in the eye. He saw these fine things, as Eve saw the forbidden fruit. See what comes of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-18Achan may have been identified through the use of the Urim and Thummim, a God-given method for casting sacred lots (objects used to seek God’s decision). These items remained in the care of the high priest, probably kept in a bag or pouch (see Exodus 28:30; Numbers 27:21). They may have been two objects of different colors, possibly stones or gems. People asked questions in a way that required a “yes” or “no” answer.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 16-1816-18. So Joshua rose up early, and brought Israel by their tribes--that is, before the tabernacle.
