Context of Joshua 6:14
12The next day Joshua rose early in the morning. The kohanim took up the ark of Adonai, 13and the seven kohanim carrying the seven shofarot of rams’ horns marched in front of the ark of Adonai and blew the shofarot, with the armed force marching before them and the rear guard marching behind the ark of Adonai, while the shofarot continued to blow. So the second day they circled the city once and returned to the camp. So they did for six days. 15Now on the seventh day they rose early, at dawn, and marched around the city in the same way seven times. - Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14So they did six days - It is not likely that the whole Israelitish host went each day round the city. This would have been utterly impossible: the fighting men alone amounted to nearly 600,000, independently of the people, who must have amounted at least to two or three millions; we may therefore safely assert that only a select number, such as was deemed necessary for the occasion, were employed. Jericho could not have been a large city: and to reduce it…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-16Verses 6-16 Wherever the ark went, the people attended it. God's ministers, by the trumpet of the everlasting gospel, which proclaims liberty and victory, must encourage the followers of Christ in their spiritual warfare. As promised deliverances must be expected in God's way, so they must be expected in his time. At last the people were to shout: they did so, and the walls fell. This was a shout of faith; they believed the walls of Jericho would fall. It…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 12-1412-14. Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord--The second day's procession seems to have taken place in the morning. In all other respects, down even to the smallest details, the arrangements of the first day continued to be the rule followed on the other six.Read the comment
