Context of Joshua 6:14
12Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests picked up the Lord's Covenant Box again. 13The seven priests who carried the trumpets marched in front of the Covenant Box. They were making a noise with their trumpets. One group of soldiers marched in front of the priests. Another group of soldiers marched behind the Covenant Box. The trumpets made a noise all the time. That is how they marched round the city on the second day. They marched round once and then they returned to their tents. They did the same thing for six days. 15On the seventh day, they got up at dawn again. They marched round the city as they had done before. But this time they did it seven times. 16The seventh time, the priests made a long, loud noise on their trumpets. Joshua told the people, ‘Shout aloud to attack! The Lord has given the city to you!

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14So they did six days - It is not likely that the whole Israelitish host went each day round the city. This would have been utterly impossible: the fighting men alone amounted to nearly 600,000, independently of the people, who must have amounted at least to two or three millions; we may therefore safely assert that only a select number, such as was deemed necessary for the occasion, were employed. Jericho could not have been a large city: and to reduce it…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-16Verses 6-16 Wherever the ark went, the people attended it. God's ministers, by the trumpet of the everlasting gospel, which proclaims liberty and victory, must encourage the followers of Christ in their spiritual warfare. As promised deliverances must be expected in God's way, so they must be expected in his time. At last the people were to shout: they did so, and the walls fell. This was a shout of faith; they believed the walls of Jericho would fall. It…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 12-1412-14. Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord--The second day's procession seems to have taken place in the morning. In all other respects, down even to the smallest details, the arrangements of the first day continued to be the rule followed on the other six.Read the comment
