Context of Joshua 3:5
3and they charged the people saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of Adonai your God and the Levitical kohanim carrying it, then you must set out from your place and follow it. 4Yet keep a distance between you and it of about 2,000 cubits by measure. Don’t come near it, so you may know the way by which you should go, for you haven’t travelled this way before.” Then Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow Adonai will do wonders in your midst.” 6Joshua spoke to the kohanim saying: “Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over ahead of the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went ahead of the people. 7Now Adonai said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

Commentaries on Joshua 3:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Sanctify yourselves - What was implied in this command we are not informed; but it is likely that it was the same as that given by Moses, Exodus 19:10-14. They were to wash themselves and their garments, and abstain from every thing that might indispose their minds from a profitable attention to the miracle about to be wrought in their behalf.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5Consecrate yourselves: They had to separate themselves from anything ceremonially unclean that would prevent an Israelite from being able to enter God's presence (see Exodus 19:9–20; Leviticus 11:44).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. Joshua said unto the people--rather "had said," for as he speaks of "to-morrow," the address must have been made previous to the day of crossing, and the sanctification was in all probability the same as Moses had commanded before the giving of the law, consisting of an outward cleansing (Ex 19:10-15) preparatory to that serious and devout state of mind with which so great a manifestation should be witnessed.Read the comment
