Context of Job 6:13

11“What is my strength, that I should hope? What is my end, that I should endure? 12Is my strength the strength of rock? Is my flesh bronze? Is there no help within me; has not success been banished from me? 14“A despairing person should have the kindness of his friend, even if he forsakes the fear of Shaddai. 15My brothers have acted deceptively, as a seasonal stream, as a torrential stream that overflows

Commentaries on Job 6:13

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Is not my help in me? - My help is all in myself; and, alas! that is perfect weakness: and my subsistence, תושיה tushiyah, all that is real, stable, and permanent, is driven quite from me. My friends have forsaken me, and I am abandoned to myself; my property is all taken away, and I have no resources left. I believe Job neither said, nor intended to say, as some interpreters have it, Reason is utterly driven from me. Surely there is no mark in this…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Is not my help in me? - This would be better rendered in an affirmative manner, or as an exclamation. The interrogative form of the previous verses need not be continued in this. The sense is, “alas! there is no help in me!” That is, “I have no strength; I must give up under these sorrows in despair.” So it is rendered by Jerome, Rosenmuller, Good, Noyes, and others. And is wisdom quite driven from me? - This, also, should be read as an affirmation…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 Job had desired death as the happy end of his miseries. For this, Eliphaz had reproved him, but he asks for it again with more vehemence than before. It was very rash to speak thus of God destroying him. Who, for one hour, could endure the wrath of the Almighty, if he let loose his hand against him? Let us rather say with David, O spare me a little. Job grounds his comfort upon the testimony of his conscience, that he had been, in some degree…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-30Job responds by criticizing his counselors and questioning God (chapters 6 and 7). He explains his intense words by indicating his deep "grief" or "anguish" (6:2–3; 7:11). Job states that Eliphaz has not provided comfort or sympathy as a friend. Instead, Eliphaz chose to argue about out of date religious or theological ideas.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. Is not my help in me?--The interrogation is better omitted. "There is no help in me!" For "wisdom," "deliverance" is a better rendering. "And deliverance is driven quite from me."Read the comment
