Context of Job 42:16

14He called the name of the first Jemimah, the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-happuch. 15Nowhere in the land were there found women as beautiful as the daughters of Job. Their father gave them an inheritance along with their brothers. After this, Job lived 140 years; he saw his children and their children for four generations. 17And so Job died, old and full of days.

Commentaries on Job 42:16

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16After this lived Job a hundred and forty years - How long he had lived before his afflictions, we cannot tell. If we could rely on the Septuagint, all would be plain, who add here, , ; "And all the years that Job lived were two hundred and forty." This makes him one hundred years of age when his trial commenced. Coverdale has, After this lyved Job forty yeares, omitting the hundred. So also in Becke's Bible, 1549. From the age, as marked down in the…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16After this Job lived an hundred and forty years - As his age at the time his calamities commenced is not mentioned, it is of course impossible to determine how old he was when he died. The Septuagint, however, has undertaken to determine this, but on what authority is unknown. They render this verse, “And Job lived after this affliction an hundred and seventy years: so that all the years that he lived were two hundred and forty.” According to this, his…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-17Verses 10-17 In the beginning of this book we had Job's patience under his troubles, for an example; here, for our encouragement to follow that example, we have his happy end. His troubles began in Satan's malice, which God restrained; his restoration began in God's mercy, which Satan could not oppose. Mercy did not return when Job was disputing with his friends, but when he was praying for them. God is served and pleased with our warm devotions, not with…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16Job lived for 140 more years, which was about twice as long as a normal life (Psalm 90:10). If God gave him double what he had before (Job 42:10), Job may have already been 70 years old, making his total life 210 years. This would fit the time of the early patriarchs in the Bible (see Genesis 25:7; 35:28; 47:28; 50:26; Deuteronomy 34:7; Joshua 24:29). to the fourth generation: God blessed Job by letting him live long enough to see his children…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1616. The Septuagint makes Job live a hundred seventy years after his calamity, and two hundred forty in all. This would make him seventy at the time of his calamity, which added to a hundred forty in Hebrew text makes up two hundred ten; a little more than the age (two hundred five) of Terah, father of Abraham, perhaps his contemporary. Man's length of life gradually shortened, till it reached threescore and ten in Moses' time (Psa 90:10). sons' sons--a…Read the comment
