Context of Isaiah 7:9
7Thus says Adonai Elohim: “It will not stand, nor will it occur. 8For the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within 65 years Ephraim will be broken and not be a people. The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If you do not trust, you will not stand.” 10Then Adonai spoke again to Ahaz saying, 11“Ask for a sign from Adonai your God—from the depths of Sheol or the heights of Heaven.”

For a description of this city, see the notes at Isaiah 28:1. The meaning of the prophet is, that Samaria should continue to be the head of Ephraim; that is, Jerusalem should not be made its capital. Firm trust in the Lord is essential, especially for a leader of God's people (see also 2 Chronicles 20:20). Leaders must act on their faith to show it exists. Ahaz and the people of his time trusted Assyria, their enemy, instead of trusting God. They looked for help from a foreign power rather than from the Lord. Later…Read the comment
