Context of Genesis 37:6

4When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak to him in shalom. 5Then Joseph dreamed a dream and told his brothers—and they hated him even more. He said to them, “Please listen to this dream I dreamed. 7There we were binding sheaves in the middle of the field. All of a sudden, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to my sheaf.” 8“Will you truly be a king over us?” his brothers said to him. “Will you really rule over us?” So they hated him even more because of his dreams and because of his words.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-11Verses 5-11 God gave Joseph betimes the prospect of his advancement, to support and comfort him under his long and grievous troubles. Observe, Joseph dreamed of his preferment, but he did not dream of his imprisonment. Thus many young people, when setting out in the world, think of nothing but prosperity and pleasure, and never dream of trouble. His brethren rightly interpreted the dream, though they abhorred the interpretation of it. While they committed…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-11God confirmed his choice of this faithful son as the future leader of the family through two symbolic dreams. This is the first of three dream sequences in chapters 37–50 (see 40:1–41:36; compare 15:13; 20:3; 28:12–15; 31:24). Dreams were often seen as a way God spoke to people. People considered a dream to be more important if it was given twice (repeated to show it was certain).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-365. Joseph dreamed a dream--Dreams in ancient times were much attended to, and hence the dream of Joseph, though but a mere boy, engaged the serious consideration of his family. But this dream was evidently symbolical. The meaning was easily discerned, and, from its being repeated under different emblems, the fulfilment was considered certain (compare Ge 41:32), whence it was that "his brethren envied him, but his father observed the saying" [Ge 37:11].Read the comment
