Context of Genesis 24:53
51Rebekah is before you. Take her and go, and let her become a wife for our master’s son, just as Adonai has spoken.” 52Now when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground to Adonai. Then the servant brought out articles of silver and gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious gifts to her brothers and to her mother. 54Then they ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and spent the night. When they arose in the morning, he said, “Send me off to my master.” 55But her brother with her mother said, “Let the young woman stay with us a few days—or ten. Afterwards she may go.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 53Jewels of silver, and jewels of gold - The word כלי keley, which we here translate jewels signifies properly vessels or instruments; and those presented by Eliezer might have been of various kinds. What he had given before, Genesis 24:22, was in token of respect, what he gave now appears to have been in the way of dowry. Precious things - מגדנת migdanoth . - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-53Verses 29-53 The making up of the marriage between Isaac and Rebekah is told very particularly. We are to notice God's providence in the common events of human life, and in them to exercise prudence and other graces. Laban went to ask Abraham's servant in, but not till he saw the ear-ring, and bracelet upon his sister's hands. We know Laban's character, by his conduct afterwards, and may think that he would not have been so free to entertain him, if he…Read the comment
