Context of Ezekiel 41:18
16the thresholds, the shuttered windows, and the galleries all around in three stories opposite the thresholds—were paneled with wood all around, from the ground up to the windows (even the windows were covered), 17over the space above the door, as far as the inner House, and on all the wall outside all around inside and outside, by measurement. It was made with cheruvim and palm trees. A palm tree was between cheruv and cheruv. Every cheruv had two faces: 19the face of a man toward the palm tree on one side and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side. Thus was it made on all the House all around. 20The cheruvim and palm trees were made from the ground up to above the door and on the wall of the Temple.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18On the symbolism of the “cherubim” see Ezekiel 1:1 note Every cherub had two faces - Not as in Exodus 26:1; Exodus 36:8 were no doubt like the cherubim over the ark, of which we have no reason to suppose that each had “two faces.” The symbolic character here admitted of the deviation.Read the comment

The cherubim were like those Ezekiel saw in his earlier visions of judgment (see Ezekiel 1:5–12; 10:2–14). In those visions, the cherubim had four faces. However, the carved images in the temple had only two faces. One face was a lion, the greatest of the wild animals. The other was a human, the highest part of God’s created order…Read the comment
