Context of Ezekiel 31:11
9I made it beautiful with its many limbs. All the trees of Eden in God’s garden envied it.’” 10Therefore thus says Adonai Elohim: “Because you were exalted in height —its top set up among leafy branches, its heart haughty in its height— I gave it into the hand of a ruler of nations, who surely dealt with it. I drove it out as befits its wickedness. 12Ruthless barbarians from the nations cut it down. They cast it down on the mountains and in all the valleys its branches fell. Its branches have laid broken in all the streambeds of the land. All the people of the earth have come out from its shade and abandoned it. 13All the birds of the sky lived on its fallen trunk and all the beasts of the field upon its fallen branches.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 31:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11The mighty one of the heathen - Nebuchadnezzar. It is worthy of notice, that Nebuchadnezzar, in the first year of his reign, rendered himself master of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian empire. See Sedar Olam. This happened about twenty years before Ezekiel delivered this prophecy; on this account, Ashshur, Ezekiel 31:3, may relate to the Assyrians, to whom it is possible the prophet here compares the Egyptians. But see the note on Ezekiel 31:3.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-18Verses 10-18 The king of Egypt resembled the king of Assyria in his greatness: here we see he resembles him in his pride. And he shall resemble him in his fall. His own sin brings his ruin. None of our comforts are ever lost, but what have been a thousand times forfeited. When great men fall, many fall with them, as many have fallen before them. The fall of proud men is for warning to others, to keep them humble. The God who placed Egypt in a high position would send a powerful nation to destroy it, as its wickedness deserved. I have banished it: The human agent would only be carrying out what God had already decided.Read the comment
