Context of Ezekiel 28:17
15You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you. 16By the abundance of your trade they filled you within with violence. So you have sinned. So I threw you out as a profane thing from the mountain of God. I made you vanish, guardian cheruv, from among the stones of fire. Your heart was exalted because of your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. I threw you down to the earth. Before kings I set you up as a spectacle. 18“‘By the multitude of your iniquities, in the injustice of your trade, you profaned your sanctuaries. So I brought fire out from within you, and it has consumed you. I have turned you to ashes on the earth in the eyes of all who saw you. 19All who know you among the people will be appalled at you. You have become a horror and will be nothing forever.’”

Commentaries on Ezekiel 28:17
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11-19Verses 11-19 The dirge of the prince of Tyre, answering to the dirge of the state. The passage is ironical; its main purpose is to depict all the glory, real or assumed, of “the prince of Tyrus,” in order to show how deplorable should be his ruin. Ezekiel 28:12 To “seal the sum” is to make up the whole measure of perfection. Compare the Septuagint Ezekiel 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden - “Thou” wast etc. The prince of Tyrus is ironically described as the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-18This sarcastic description of the prince of Tyre's greatness and pride sets him up for his fall, similar to the fall of humanity (Genesis 3). Like Adam, the king of Tyre's supposedly blameless state was temporary and ended abruptly when evil was found in him. His wealth and dishonest trade led him to violence (compare Ezekiel 26:17). Someone who claimed to be greater than Adam could experience a similar fall from favor and be banished from the mountain of…Read the comment
