Context of Ezekiel 21:5
3Say to the brush land of the South: ‘Hear the word of Adonai!’ Thus says Adonai Elohim: ‘Behold, I will kindle a fire in you. It will devour every moist tree in you and every dry tree. Its leaping flame will not be extinguished. All faces from the south to the north will be scorched by it. 4All flesh will see that I, Adonai, have kindled it; it will not be extinguished.’” Then I said, “Ah, Adonai! They say of me. ‘Isn’t he just speaking in parables?’” 6Then the word of Adonai came to me saying: 7“Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem and proclaim to the sanctuaries and prophesy against the land of Israel.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5It shall not return any more - That is, till all the work that I have designed for it is done. Nor did it; for Nebuchadnezzar never rested till he had subdued all the lands from the south to the north, from the Euphrates to the Nile.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-5The Lord himself was the true enemy Israel needed to fear. He was about to bring a complete judgment against them. Normally, people expect the righteous to escape judgment and the wicked to receive it. This contrast is like the green tree and the dry tree in the parable (Ezekiel 20:47–48). God’s judgment on sin would be like a very hot fire. It would burn everything it touched.Read the comment
