Context of Ezekiel 14:14
12The word of Adonai came to me saying, 13“Son of man, suppose a land sins against Me by trespassing grievously and I stretch out My hand over it, break off its staff of bread, send famine upon it and cut it off from man and beast. Even if these three men—Noah, Daniel and Job—be in it, they would only deliver their own souls by their righteousness.” It is a declaration of Adonai. 15“If I cause evil beasts to pass through the land and they ravage it and make it a wasteland, so that no one would pass through because of the beasts, 16even if these three men were in it, as I live, says Adonai, they will not deliver sons or daughters. They would only deliver themselves, but the land will be desolate.

Noah, though a righteous man, could not by his intercession preserve the old world from being drowned. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-23Verses 12-23 National sins bring national judgments. Though sinners escape one judgment, another is waiting for them. When God's professing people rebel against him, they may justly expect all his judgments. The faith, obedience, and prayers of Noah prevailed to the saving of his house, but not of the old world. Job's sacrifice and prayer in behalf of his friends were accepted, and Daniel had prevailed for the saving his companions and the wise men of…Read the comment

If anyone could deserve a delay in God’s judgment, it would be these men. However, even if a land included these three righteous men, their righteousness would not save their own sons or daughters from coming disaster (Ezekiel 14:20). Their obedience could only save themselves. It would certainly not…Read the comment
