Context of Exodus 10:17
15For they covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkened, and they ate every plant in the land and all the fruit from the trees that the hail had left. No green thing remained, not a tree or a plant of the field throughout all the land of Egypt. 16Then Pharaoh quickly called for Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against Adonai your God and against you. Now forgive my sin, only this once, please! So pray to Adonai your God—just so He would take this death away from me!” 18So he went out from Pharaoh and prayed to Adonai. 19Then Adonai turned the wind from the west, very strong, and it carried off the locusts and drove them into the Sea of Reeds. Not one locust remained in all the territory of Egypt.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17Forgive, I pray thee, my sin only this once - What a strange case! And what a series of softening and hardening, of sinning and repenting! Had he not now another opportunity of returning to God? But the love of gain, and the gratification of his own self-will and obstinacy, finally prevailed.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17This death only - Pliny calls locusts a pestilence brought on by divine wrath. Pharaoh now recognizes the justice of his servants‘ apprehensions, Exodus 10:7.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-20Verses 12-20 God bids Moses stretch out his hand; locusts came at the call. An army might more easily have been resisted than this host of insects. Who then is able to stand before the great God? They covered the face of the earth, and ate up the fruit of it. Herbs grow for the service of man; yet when God pleases, insects shall plunder him, and eat the bread out of his mouth. Let our labour be, not for the habitation and meat thus exposed, but for those…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17forgive my sin: Pharaoh’s understanding grew deeper. He admitted that his pride and his refusal to keep his word were sins. He understood that sin cannot be ignored. It must be forgiven. However, even though Pharaoh understood this truth, he still refused to obey. His heart (inner attitude) did not change.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1913-19. the Lord brought an east wind--The rod of Moses was again raised, and the locusts came. They are natives of the desert and are only brought by an east wind into Egypt, where they sometimes come in sun-obscuring clouds, destroying in a few days every green blade in the track they traverse. Man, with all his contrivances, can do nothing to protect himself from the overwhelming invasion. Egypt has often suffered from locusts. But the plague that…Read the comment
