Context of 2 Samuel 2:7
5So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “Blessed are you of Adonai for showing this kindness to Saul your lord, by burying him. 6So now may Adonai show you kindness and faithfulness; and I also will show you goodness because you have done this thing. Now therefore, be strong and brave, for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.” 8Now Abner son of Ner, Saul’s army commander, had taken Saul’s son Ish-bosheth, and brought him over to Mahanaim. 9Then he made him king over Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin—over all Israel.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 2:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Now let your hands be strengthened - David certainly wished to attach the men of Jabesh to his interest; he saw that they were generous and valiant, and must be of great service to him whose part they espoused; and he was no doubt afraid that they would attach themselves to the house of Saul, in consideration of the eminent services Saul had rendered them in rescuing them from Nahash, king of the Ammonites.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7David became king because the people of Judah anointed him, which gave him a legal basis for his rule, just as it had for Saul (1 Samuel 11:15). Years earlier, the prophet Samuel had also anointed David, showing that God had chosen him to be king (1 Samuel 16:13).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-75-7. David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead--There can be no doubt that this message of thanks for their bold and dangerous enterprise in rescuing the bodies of Saul and his sons was an expression of David's personal and genuine feeling of satisfaction. At the same time, it was a stroke of sound and timely policy. In this view the announcement of his royal power in Judah, accompanied by the pledge of his protection of the men of…Read the comment
