Context of 2 Kings 8:19
17He was 32 years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 18But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab did—for Ahab’s daughter was his wife—and he did what was evil in Adonai’s eyes. Nevertheless, Adonai was not willing to destroy Judah, for the sake of David His servant, since He had promised to give him a lamp for his children all days. 20In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and set up their own king. 21Then Joram crossed over to Zair with all his chariots. It came about that he rose by night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and the chariot commanders, but his troops fled to their tents.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19Even though Jehoram was wicked, God did not destroy Judah. He honored his promise to David (2 Samuel 7:11–16). The Lord promised to keep David’s descendants on Judah's throne as a symbol of God's grace (1 Kings 11:36). God's promises to David are ultimately fulfilled in Jesus (Ezekiel 34:23–31), who is the light of the world (John 4:1–5).Read the comment
