Context of 2 Kings 12:13
11Whenever they saw that there was a large amount of money in the chest, the royal scribe and the kohen gadol would come up, put the money in bags and count the money that was found in the House of Adonai. 12Then they would give the money that was weighed out into the hands of those who did the work, who had been overseeing the House of Adonai—they, in turn, would pay it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the House of Adonai, and to the masons and the stonecutters, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the damage to Adonai’s House, and for all that was laid out for the House to repair it. 14But there were no silver cups, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, and no vessels of gold or vessels of silver made for the House of Adonai from the money brought to the House of Adonai. 15For they gave it to those that did the work, and with it they repaired the House of Adonai.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Howbeit there were not made - bowls, etc. - That is, there were no vessels made for the service of the temple till all the outward repairs were completed; but after this was done, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels of gold and silver; 2 Chronicles 24:14.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Comparing this verse with the marginal reference, it will be seen that the author of Kings desires to point out, that the repairs were not delayed by any deductions from the money that flowed in. The writer of Chronicles describes what became of the surplus in the chest after the last repairs were completed. The need of supplying fresh bowls, snuffers, etc., arose from the pollution of those previously used in the temple service by their application to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-21The record of Joash's reign follows a typical format: It describes when he became king (2 Kings 11:21–12:3) It tells about his royal activities (2 Kings 12:4–18) It gives the closing notice of his reign (2 Kings 12:19–21). The main focus is Joash’s efforts to repair the temple of the Lord (2 Kings 12:4–16). Later, when the army of Aram [the Arameans] invaded, Joash took treasures from the temple and gave them away to protect his city (2 Kings 12:17–18).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1613-16. Howbeit there were not made ... bowls, &c.--When the repairs of the temple had been completed, the surplus was appropriated to the purchase of the temple furniture. The integrity of the overseers of the work being undoubted, no account was exacted of the way in which they applied the money given to them, while other moneys levied at the temple were left to the disposal of the priests as the law directed (Le 5:16; Nu 5:8).Read the comment
