Context of 2 Kings 12:13
11Then they would put the counted money into the hands of those who supervised the work on the house of the LORD, who in turn would pay those doing the work—the carpenters, builders, 12masons, and stonecutters. They also purchased timber and dressed stone to repair the damage to the house of the LORD, and they paid the other expenses of the temple repairs. However, the money brought into the house of the LORD was not used for making silver basins, wick trimmers, sprinkling bowls, trumpets, or any articles of gold or silver for the house of the LORD. 14Instead, it was paid to those doing the work, and with it they repaired the house of the LORD. 15No accounting was required from the men who received the money to pay the workmen, because they acted with integrity.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Howbeit there were not made - bowls, etc. - That is, there were no vessels made for the service of the temple till all the outward repairs were completed; but after this was done, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels of gold and silver; 2 Chronicles 24:14.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Comparing this verse with the marginal reference, it will be seen that the author of Kings desires to point out, that the repairs were not delayed by any deductions from the money that flowed in. The writer of Chronicles describes what became of the surplus in the chest after the last repairs were completed. The need of supplying fresh bowls, snuffers, etc., arose from the pollution of those previously used in the temple service by their application to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-21The record of Joash's reign follows a typical format: It describes when he became king (2 Kings 11:21–12:3) It tells about his royal activities (2 Kings 12:4–18) It gives the closing notice of his reign (2 Kings 12:19–21). The main focus is Joash’s efforts to repair the temple of the Lord (2 Kings 12:4–16). Later, when the army of Aram [the Arameans] invaded, Joash took treasures from the temple and gave them away to protect his city (2 Kings 12:17–18).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1613-16. Howbeit there were not made ... bowls, &c.--When the repairs of the temple had been completed, the surplus was appropriated to the purchase of the temple furniture. The integrity of the overseers of the work being undoubted, no account was exacted of the way in which they applied the money given to them, while other moneys levied at the temple were left to the disposal of the priests as the law directed (Le 5:16; Nu 5:8).Read the comment
