Context of 2 Kings 11:19
17Then Jehoiada cut a covenant between Adonai and the king and the people—that they would be Adonai’s people—and also between the king and the people. 18Next, all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They broke his altars and his images into pieces thoroughly, and slew Mattan, the priest of Baal, before the altars. Moreover, the kohen appointed officers over the House of Adonai. Then he took the captains over hundreds, the Carites, the guard, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the House of Adonai, and came by the way of the gate of the guards to the royal palace. So he sat on the royal throne. 20Then all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet—they had already slain Athaliah with the sword in the royal palace.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19They conducted the king down from the temple hill, across the valley of the Tyropoeum, and up the opposite hill to the royal palace, entering it not by the “horse-gate” 2 Kings 11:16, where Athaliah had just been slain, but by the “gate of the guard” 2 Kings 11:6, which was probably the main gate of the palace on the eastern side (see 2 Chronicles 23:20).Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-21Verses 17-21 King and people would cleave most firmly to each other, when both had joined themselves to the Lord. Covenants are of use, both to remind us of, and bind us to, the duties already binding on us. They immediately abolished idolatry; and, pursuant to the covenant with one another, they expressed mutual…Read the comment
