Context of 2 Kings 10:12

10Know then that not a word of Adonai will fall to the earth—which Adonai spoke about the house of Ahab—for Adonai has done what He spoke through His servant Elijah.” 11So Jehu struck down all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel—all his nobles, his acquaintances, his priests—until he left him not a survivor. Then he arose and went on his way to Samaria. As he was at Shearing House of the Shepherds along the way, 13Jehu met with the kinsmen of King Ahaziah of Judah and asked, “Who are you?” “We are the kinsmen of Ahaziah,” they replied, “We’ve come down to greet the children of the king and the children of the queen mother.” 14“Take them alive!” he said. So they took them alive, then struck them down at the pit of Shearing House, 42 men—he spared not a single one of them.

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-14We do not know the exact location of Beth-eked, but it was near Jenin. Ahaziah’s relatives responded to Jehu, which led to their downfall. Jehu thought their connection to Ahaziah, and indirectly to Ahab's family through his daughter Athaliah, might give them a claim to Israel's throne. In this second series of executions, Jehu once more went beyond his orders to end Ahab’s dynasty.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-172Ki 10:1-17. Jehu Causes Seventy of Ahab's Children to Be Beheaded. 1-4. Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria--As it appears (2Ki 10:13), that grandsons are included it is probable that this number comprehended the whole posterity of Ahab. Their being all assembled in that capital might arise from their being left there on the king's departure for Ramoth-gilead, or from their taking refuge in some of the strongholds of that city on the news of Jehu's…Read the comment
