Context of 1 Chronicles 28:5
3But God said to me, ‘You will not build a House for My name because you are a man of war and have shed blood.’ 4Yet Adonai, the God of Israel, has chosen me out of all my ancestral house to be king over Israel forever. For He chose Judah as ruler, and of the house of Judah, my father’s house, and of my father’s sons, He took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel. Moreover, of all my sons—for Adonai has given me many sons—He has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of Adonai over Israel. 6“He said to me, ‘Solomon your son will build My House and My courts for I have chosen him to be a son to Me and I will be a father to him. 7I will establish his kingdom forever, if he resolutely observes My mitzvot and My ordinances as at this day.’

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-6the LORD...chose me...to be king over Israel forever: God's selection of David started with Judah (Genesis 49:8–12), reached its peak with David (1 Samuel 16:1–13), and continued with Solomon (1 Chronicles 28:5–6, 10). All later kings ruled because of God's promise to David.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4-54-5. he hath chosen Solomon--The spirit of David's statement is this:--It was not my ambition, my valor, or my merit that led to the enthronement of myself and family; it was the grace of God which chose the tribe, the family, the person--myself in the first instance, and now Solomon, to whom, as the Lord's anointed, you are all bound to submit. Like that of Christ, of whom he was a type, the appointment of Solomon to the kingdom above all his brethren…Read the comment
