Context of 1 Chronicles 11:23
21Of the Three, he was more highly esteemed than the other two and became their commander, even though he was not one of the three. 22Beniah son of Jehoiada was a valiant man from Kabzeel who had done mighty deeds. He killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab, and went down and killed a lion inside a pit on a snowy day. He also killed the giant Egyptian man who was five cubits tall. In his hand the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s beam, yet Beniah attacked him with a club. He snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 24These were the exploits of Beniah son of Jehoiada, who gained renown among the three mighty men. 25Behold, he was more honorable than the 30, yet he was not one of the Three. Nevertheless, David set him over his bodyguard.

In strengthening him, they strengthened themselves and their own interest, for his advancement was theirs. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2323. he went down--the ordinary phraseology for expressing an engagement in battle. The encounter of Benaiah with this gigantic Egyptian reminds us, in some respects, of David's combat with Goliath. At least, the height of this giant, which was about eight feet, and his armor, resembled his of Gath. with a staff--that is, having no other weapon in his hand than his walking stick.Read the comment
