1 Samuel 18:8-30
8And SaulH7586 was veryH3966 angryH2734, and the sayingH1697 displeasedH3415H5869 him; and he saidH559, They have ascribedH5414 to DavidH1732 ten thousandsH7233, and to me they have ascribedH5414 thousandsH505: and what can he have more but the kingdomH4410?1 9And SaulH7586 kept a jealous eye onH5770 DavidH1732 from that dayH3117 and onwardH1973. 10And it came to pass on the next dayH4283, that the evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 cameH6743 upon SaulH7586, and he prophesiedH5012 in the midstH8432 of the houseH1004: and DavidH1732 playedH5059 with his handH3027, as at other timesH3117: and there was a javelinH2595 in Saul’sH7586 handH3027. 11And SaulH7586 castH2904 the javelinH2595; for he saidH559, I will smiteH5221 DavidH1732 even to the wallH7023. And DavidH1732 escapedH5437 from his presenceH6440 twiceH6471.
12And SaulH7586 was afraidH3372 ofH6440 DavidH1732, because the LORDH3068 was with him, and had departedH5493 from SaulH7586. 13Therefore SaulH7586 removedH5493 him from him, and madeH7760 him his captainH8269 over a thousandH505; and he went outH3318 and came inH935 beforeH6440 the peopleH5971. 14And DavidH1732 behaved himself wiselyH7919 in all his waysH1870; and the LORDH3068 was with him.2 15Therefore when SaulH7586 sawH7200 that he behavedH7919 himself veryH3966 wiselyH7919, he was afraidH1481 ofH6440 him. 16But all IsraelH3478 and JudahH3063 lovedH157 DavidH1732, because he went outH3318 and came inH935 beforeH6440 them. 17And SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Behold my elderH1419 daughterH1323 MerabH4764, her will I giveH5414 thee for a wifeH802: only be thou valiantH1121H2428 for me, and fightH3898 the LORD’SH3068 battlesH4421. For SaulH7586 saidH559, Let not my handH3027 be upon him, but let the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430 be upon him.3 18And DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Who am I? and what is my lifeH2416, or my father’sH1 familyH4940 in IsraelH3478, that I should be son in lawH2860 to the kingH4428? 19But it came to pass at the timeH6256 when MerabH4764 Saul’sH7586 daughterH1323 should have been givenH5414 to DavidH1732, that she was givenH5414 to AdrielH5741 the MeholathiteH4259 for a wifeH802. 20And MichalH4324 Saul’sH7586 daughterH1323 lovedH157 DavidH1732: and they toldH5046 SaulH7586, and the thingH1697 pleasedH3474H5869 him.4 21And SaulH7586 saidH559, I will giveH5414 her to him, that she may be a snareH4170 to him, and that the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430 may be against him. Therefore SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Thou shalt this dayH3117 be my son in lawH2859 in the one of the twoH8147. 22And SaulH7586 commandedH6680 his servantsH5650, saying, SpeakH1696 with DavidH1732 secretlyH3909, and sayH559, Behold, the kingH4428 hath delightH2654 in thee, and all his servantsH5650 loveH157 thee: now therefore be the king’sH4428 son in lawH2859. 23And Saul’sH7586 servantsH5650 spokeH1696 those wordsH1697 in the earsH241 of DavidH1732. And DavidH1732 saidH559, SeemethH5869 it to you a lightH7043 thing to be a king’sH4428 son in lawH2859, seeing that I am a poorH7326 manH376, and lightly esteemedH7034? 24And the servantsH5650 of SaulH7586 toldH5046 him, sayingH559, On this mannerH1697 spokeH1696 DavidH1732.5 25And SaulH7586 saidH559, Thus shall ye sayH559 to DavidH1732, The kingH4428 desirethH2656 not any dowryH4119, but an hundredH3967 foreskinsH6190 of the PhilistinesH6430, to be avengedH5358 of the king’sH4428 enemiesH341. But SaulH7586 thoughtH2803 to make DavidH1732 fallH5307 by the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430. 26And when his servantsH5650 toldH5046 DavidH1732 these wordsH1697, it pleasedH3474H1697H5869 DavidH1732 well to be the king’sH4428 son in lawH2859: and the daysH3117 had not expiredH4390.6 27Therefore DavidH1732 aroseH6965 and wentH3212, he and his menH582, and slewH5221 of the PhilistinesH6430 two hundredH3967 menH376; and DavidH1732 broughtH935 their foreskinsH6190, and they gave them in full numberH4390 to the kingH4428, that he might be the king’sH4428 son in lawH2859. And SaulH7586 gaveH5414 him MichalH4324 his daughterH1323 for a wifeH802. 28And SaulH7586 sawH7200 and knewH3045 that the LORDH3068 was with DavidH1732, and that MichalH4324 Saul’sH7586 daughterH1323 lovedH157 him. 29And SaulH7586 was yet the moreH3254 afraidH3372 ofH6440 DavidH1732; and SaulH7586 became David’sH1732 enemyH341 continuallyH3117. 30Then the princesH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 went forthH3318: and it came to pass, afterH1767 they went forthH3318, that DavidH1732 behaved himself more wiselyH7919 than all the servantsH5650 of SaulH7586; so that his nameH8034 was muchH3966 esteemedH3365.7
