Context of Psalms 89:20
18For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king. 19Then thou didst speak in vision to thy holy one, and didst say, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: 21With whom my hand shall be established: my arm also shall strengthen him. 22The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.

Here the psalmist begins to reason with God relative to David, his posterity, and the perpetuity of his kingdom; which promises appear now to have utterly failed, as the throne had been overturned, and all the people carried into captivity. But all these things may have…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20I have found David my servant - That is, I found him among the sheepfolds; in humble life. I saw there one who was qualified for the high office of being the ruler of the nation, and I designated, or set him apart, for that office. The idea is, that there was in him a precious qualification for this work, and that God had seen this, and, in accordance with this, had summoned him to his service. With my holy oil have I anointed him - By the hand of Samuel…Read the comment

Yet all this was a faint shadow of the Redeemer's sufferings, deliverance, glory, and authority, in whom alone these predictions and promises are fully…Read the comment
