Context of Psalms 89:20

18Yes, our protection comes from the Lord, and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king. 19Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful people. You said, “I have raised up a warrior. I have selected him from the common people to be king. I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil. 21I will steady him with my hand; with my powerful arm I will make him strong. 22His enemies will not defeat him, nor will the wicked overpower him.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20I have found David my servant - This is the sum of what God had said in prophetic visions to his saints or holy persons, Samuel, Nathan, and Gad; see 1 Samuel 16:1, 1 Samuel 16:12. Here the psalmist begins to reason with God relative to David, his posterity, and the perpetuity of his kingdom; which promises appear now to have utterly failed, as the throne had been overturned, and all the people carried into captivity. But all these things may have…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20I have found David my servant - That is, I found him among the sheepfolds; in humble life. I saw there one who was qualified for the high office of being the ruler of the nation, and I designated, or set him apart, for that office. The idea is, that there was in him a precious qualification for this work, and that God had seen this, and, in accordance with this, had summoned him to his service. With my holy oil have I anointed him - By the hand of Samuel…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-37Verses 19-37 The Lord anointed David with the holy oil, not only as an emblem of the graces and gifts he received, but as a type of Christ, the King Priest, and Prophet, anointed with the Holy Ghost without measure. David after his anointing, was persecuted, but none could gain advantage against him. Yet all this was a faint shadow of the Redeemer's sufferings, deliverance, glory, and authority, in whom alone these predictions and promises are fully…Read the comment
