Context of Judges 3:19
17And he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man. 18And when he had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bore the tribute. But he himself turned back at the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand to thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him. 20And Ehud came to him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God to thee. - Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19He - turned - from the quarries - פסילים pesilim . Some of the versions understand this word as meaning idols or graven images, or some spot where the Moabites had a place of idolatrous worship. As פסל pasal signifies to cut, hew, or engrave, it may be applied to the images thus cut, or to the place, or quarry whence they were digged: but it is most likely that idols are meant. Some think that trenches are meant, and that pesilim here may mean the…Read the comment

The Israelites did ill, and the Moabites did worse; yet because God punishes the sins of his own people in this world, Israel is weakened, and Moab strengthened against them. If lesser troubles do not do the work, God will send greater. When Israel prays again, God raises up Ehud. As a judge, or minister of Divine justice, Ehud put to death Eglon, the king of Moab, and thus executed the…Read the comment

Later, Gilgal remained an important center for both the faithful (1 Samuel 7:16) and idol worshippers (Hosea 4:15; 9:15; 12:11; Amos 4:4; 5:5).Read the comment
