Context of Job 38:18
16Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? 17Have the gates of death been revealed to thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all. 19Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is its place, 20That thou shouldest take it to its bound, and that thou shouldest know the paths to its house?

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? - How far the earth extends. To see the force of this, we must remember that the early conception of the earth was that it was a vast plain, and that in the time of Job its limits were unknown. One of the earliest and most obvious inquiries would naturally be, What was the extent of the earth? By what was it bounded? And what was the character of the regions beyond those which were then known? All this was…Read the comment
