Context of Jeremiah 36:29
27Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the scroll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying, 28Take thee again another scroll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah hath burned. And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast burned this scroll, saying, Why hast thou written in it, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from there man and beast? 30Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost. 31And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not.

Commentaries on Jeremiah 36:29
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 29The king of Babylon - These words do not prove that Nebuchadnezzar had not already come, and compelled Jehoiakim to become his vassal. The force lies in the last words, which predict such a coming as would make the land utterly desolate: and this would be the result of the king throwing off the Chaldaean yoke.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-32Verses 20-32 Those who despise the word of God, will soon show, as this king did, that they hate it; and, like him, they would wish it destroyed. See what enmity there is against God in the carnal mind, and wonder at his patience. The princes showed some concern, till they saw how light the king made of it. Beware of making light of God's word!Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29-31To die without heirs or a proper burial was considered the worst fate (see Jeremiah 22:19; Ecclesiastes 6:3). Jehoiakim’s son, Jehoiachin, ruled for only three months. Unlike his father, Jehoiachin heeded Jeremiah’s warning and surrendered to the Babylonians. They took him and others to Babylon as captives (Jeremiah 22:24–30; 2 Kings 24:8–16).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2929. say to Jehoiakim--not in person, as Jeremiah was "hidden" (Jr 36:26), but by the written word of prophecy. saying, Why--This is what the king had desired to be said to Jeremiah if he should be found; kings often dislike the truth to be told them.Read the comment
