Context of Isaiah 7:14

12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD. 13And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. 16For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken by both her kings.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Therefore - Since you will not “ask” a pledge that the land shall be safe, Yahweh will furnish one unasked. A sign or proof is desirable in the case, and Yahweh will not withhold it because a proud and contemptuous monarch refuses to seek it. Perhaps there is no prophecy in the Old Testament on which more has been written, and which has produced more perplexity among commentators than this. And after all, it still remains, in many respects, very obscure…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-16Verses 10-16 Secret disaffection to God is often disguised with the colour of respect to him; and those who are resolved that they will not trust God, yet pretend they will not tempt him. The prophet reproved Ahaz and his court, for the little value they had for Divine revelation. Nothing is more grievous to God than distrust, but the unbelief of man shall not make the promise of God of no effect; the Lord himself shall give a sign. How great soever your…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14This prophecy was fully realized with the birth of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:18–24). It is likely that it also partially came true in Isaiah's time, possibly with the birth of the godly King Hezekiah, son of Ahaz, or one of Isaiah's children. The similar verb sequence in Isaiah 7:14 and 8:3 (be with child … give birth … call) and the connection between Immanuel and Maher-shalal-hash-baz in 8:5–10 suggest they were the same person. The name Immanuel means…Read the comment
