Context of Deuteronomy 30:2
1And it shall come to pass, when all these things have come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, where the LORD thy God hath driven thee, And shalt return to the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul; 3That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, where the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. 4If any of thine shall be driven out to the outmost parts of heaven, from there will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from there will he bring thee:

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 30:2
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-10Verses 1-10 The rejection of Israel and the desolation of the promised inheritance were not to be the end of God‘s dispensations. The closing words of the address therefore are words of comfort and promise. Compare marginal reference and Deuteronomy 4:29 ff; 1 Kings 8:46-50. The chastisements of God would lead the nation to repent, and thereupon God would again bless them. Deuteronomy 30:3 Will turn thy captivity - Will change or put an end to thy state…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3with all your heart and all your soul: These words reflect the teaching found in the Shema (Israel’s great statement of covenant faith and commitment). The Shema calls Israel to love the Lord fully and faithfully (compare 6:4). To receive God’s forgiveness and return to the land, the people had to obey the covenant. Obedience was required before restoration could take place.Read the comment

They do not consider the promise as fulfilled by their restoration from the captivity in Babylon, for Israel…Read the comment
