Context of Deuteronomy 30:2
1I have told you about the ways that God may bless you and the ways that he may curse you. If you do not obey the Lord your God, he will send you away to live in many foreign countries. When that happens, you will think about what I have said. Then you and your children may decide to turn back to the Lord. You may choose to obey him completely in everything that you think and in everything that you do. That is what I am commanding you to do today. 3If you do that, the Lord your God will bring you back home and he will forgive you. He will turn to help you again. He will bring you back from the countries where he sent you to live. 4He will bring back even those of you who live in countries that are very far away. You will all come back to live together again.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 30:2
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-10Verses 1-10 The rejection of Israel and the desolation of the promised inheritance were not to be the end of God‘s dispensations. The closing words of the address therefore are words of comfort and promise. Compare marginal reference and Deuteronomy 4:29 ff; 1 Kings 8:46-50. The chastisements of God would lead the nation to repent, and thereupon God would again bless them. Deuteronomy 30:3 Will turn thy captivity - Will change or put an end to thy state…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3with all your heart and all your soul: These words reflect the teaching found in the Shema (Israel’s great statement of covenant faith and commitment). The Shema calls Israel to love the Lord fully and faithfully (compare 6:4). To receive God’s forgiveness and return to the land, the people had to obey the covenant. Obedience was required before restoration could take place.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-101-10. when all these things are come upon thee, ... and thou shalt return ... then the Lord thy God will turn thy captivity--The hopes of the Hebrew people are ardently directed to this promise, and they confidently expect that God, commiserating their forlorn and fallen condition, will yet rescue them from all the evils of their long dispersion. They do not consider the promise as fulfilled by their restoration from the captivity in Babylon, for Israel…Read the comment
