Context of Deuteronomy 22:1
Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ox or his sheep go astray, and without thy help from them: thou shalt in any case bring them again to thy brother. 2And if thy brother shall not be near to thee, or if thou shalt not know him, then thou shalt bring it to thy own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother shall seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again. 3In like manner shalt thou do with his donkey; and so shalt thou do with his raiment; and with all lost things of thy brother’s, which he hath lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do likewise: thou mayest not without thy help.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep go astray - The same humane, merciful, and wise regulations which we met with before, Exodus 23:4, Exodus 23:5, well calculated to keep in remembrance the second grand branch of the law of God, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. A humane man cannot bear to see even an ass fall under his burden, and not endeavor to relieve him; and a man who loves his neighbor as himself cannot see his property in…Read the comment

(13-30) Verses 1-4 If we duly regard the golden rule of "doing to others as we would they should do unto us," many particular precepts might be omitted. We can have no property in any thing that we find. Religion teaches us to be neighbourly, and to be ready to do all good offices to all men. We know not how soon we may have occasion for help.Read the comment

The duty inculcated is an act of common justice and charity, which, while it was taught by the law of nature, was more clearly and forcibly…Read the comment
