Context of Amos 5:25

23Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy harps. 24But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream. Have ye offered to me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel? 26But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Molech and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves. 27Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.

Commentaries on Amos 5:25

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 25Have ye offered unto me sacrifices - Some have been led to think that "during the forty years which the Israelites spent in the wilderness, between Egypt and the promised land, they did not offer any sacrifices, as in their circumstances it was impossible; they offered none because they had none." But such people must have forgotten that when the covenant was made at Sinai, there were burnt-offerings and peace-offerings of oxen sacrificed to the Lord…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 25Have ye offered - (better, “Did ye offer”) unto Me sacrifices and offerings? Israel justified himself to himself by his half-service. This had been his way from the first. “Their heart was not whole with God, neither abode they in His covenant” Psalm 78:37. He thought to be accepted by God, because he did a certain homage to Him. He acknowledged God in his own way. God sets before him another instance of this half-service and what it issued in; the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-27Verses 18-27 Woe unto those that desire the day of the Lord's judgments, that wish for times of war and confusion; as some who long for changes, hoping to rise upon the ruins of their country! but this should be so great a desolation, that nobody could gain by it. The day of the Lord will be a dark, dismal, gloomy day to all impenitent sinners. When God makes a day dark, all the world cannot make it light. Those who are not reformed by the judgments of…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 25Israel’s relationship with God was based on true devotion, which led to obedience (1 Samuel 15:22–23). Sacrifices symbolizing repentance and faith could mend a break caused by sin, but they could not replace living according to God’s word. Israel wandered for 40 years in the wilderness after the rebellion at Kadesh-barnea (see Numbers 14:32–35).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 25-2625-26. Have ye offered? &c.--Yes: ye have. "But (all the time with strange inconsistency) ye have borne (aloft in solemn pomp) the tabernacle (that is, the portable shrine, or model tabernacle: small enough not to be detected by Moses; compare Ac 19:24) of your Molech" (that idol is "your" god; I am not, though ye go through the form of presenting offerings to Me). The question, "Have ye," is not a denial (for they did offer in the wilderness to Jehovah…Read the comment
