- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song - Poetry has been cultivated in all ages and among all people, from the most refined to the most barbarous; and to it principally, under the kind providence of God, we are indebted for most of the original accounts we have of the ancient nations of the universe. Equally measured lines, with a harmonious collocation of expressive, sonorous, and sometimes highly metaphorical terms, the alternate lines…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-18Verses 1-18 With the deliverance of Israel is associated the development of the national poetry, which finds its first and perfect expression in this magnificent hymn. It was sung by Moses and the people, an expression which evidently points to him as the author. That it was written at the time is an assertion expressly made in the text, and it is supported by the strongest internal evidence. In every age this song gave the tone to the poetry of Israel…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1The song of Moses for the deliverance of Israel. (1-21) The bitter waters at Marah, The Israelites come to Elim. (22-27) Verses 1-21 This song is the most ancient we know of. It is a holy song, to the honour of God, to exalt his name, and celebrate his praise, and his only, not in the least to magnify any man. Holiness to the Lord is in every part of it. It may be considered as typical, and prophetical of the final destruction of the enemies of the…Read the comment

I will sing: The first two verses use very personal words. They show that God relates to people in a personal way. He is not an impersonal force. He relates to us as one person relates to another. In the Bible, songs of thanks and praise usually state the reason for praise near the beginning (see Psalm 95:1–3; 96:1–4). Here, the reason is…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-271. Then sang Moses and the children of Israel--The scene of this thanksgiving song is supposed to have been at the landing place on the eastern shore of the Red Sea, at Ayoun Musa, "the fountains of Moses." They are situated somewhat farther northward along the shore than the opposite point from which the Israelites set out. But the line of the people would be extended during the passage, and one extremity of it would reach as far north as these…Read the comment
