Context of Leviticus 23:36
34Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto Yhwh. 35On the first day shall be an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yhwh: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yhwh: it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein. 37These are the feasts of Yhwh, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto Yhwh, a burnt offering, and a grain offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day: 38Beside the sabbaths of Yhwh, and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill offerings, which ye give unto Yhwh.

Commentaries on Leviticus 23:36
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 36An offering made by fire - See Leviticus 23:8. The succession of sacrifices prescribed in Numbers 29:12-38, which forms such a marked feature in the Feast of Tabernacles, tends to show the distinctness of the “solemn assembly” from the festal week.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-44Verses 33-44 In the feast of Tabernacles there was a remembrance of their dwelling in tents, or booths, in the wilderness, as well as their fathers dwelling in tents in Canaan; to remind them of their origin and their deliverance. Christ's tabernacling on earth in human nature, might also be prefigured. And it represents the believer's life on earth: a stranger and pilgrim here below, his home and heart are above with his Saviour. They would the more…Read the comment

This celebrated the time they spent in tents during their wilderness wanderings. It also reminded them of God's faithfulness during that period. For a list of sacrifices to be offered each day, see Numbers 29:12–34.Read the comment
