Context of Job 30:13

11Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me. 12Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction. They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper. 14They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me. 15Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13They mar my path - They destroy the way-marks, so that there is no safety in travelling through the deserts, the guide-posts and way-marks being gone. These may be an allusion here to a besieged city: the besiegers strive by every means and way to distress the besieged; stopping up the fountains, breaking up the road, raising up towers to project arrows and stones into the city, called here raising up against it the ways of destruction, Job 30:12…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13They mar my path - They break up all my plans. Perhaps here, also, the image is taken from war, and Job may represent himself as on a line of march, and he says that this rabble comes and breaks up his path altogether. They break down the bridges, and tear up the way, so that it is impossible to pass along. His plans of life were embarrassed by them, and they were to him a perpetual annoyance. They set forward my calamity - Luther renders this part of the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-14The series of images here shows a military attack on a city with strong defenses. Job had already used this image to describe God's attack on him (Job 19:10–12). The word translated as snares might refer to ramps raised against a city's walls. A siege ramp was a large sloped structure of earth and stones that armies built against city walls. These ramps allowed attacking soldiers to climb up to the top of the walls during a battle.Read the comment
