Context of Deuteronomy 10:8
6And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest’s office in his stead. 7From thence they journeyed unto Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Jotbath, a land of rivers of waters. At that time Yhwh separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of Yhwh, to stand before Yhwh to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day. 9Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; Yhwh is his inheritance, according as Yhwh thy God promised him. 10And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time, forty days and forty nights; And Yhwh hearkened unto me at that time also, and Yhwh would not destroy thee.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-11Verses 1-11 These verses are closely connected with the preceding chapter, and state very briefly the results of the intercession of Moses recorded in Deuteronomy 9:25-29. The people are reminded that all their blessings and privileges, forfeited by apostasy as soon as bestowed, were only now their own by a new and most unmerited act of grace on the part of God, won from Him by the self-sacrificing mediation of Moses himself Deuteronomy 10:10. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-96-9. the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera--So sudden a change from a spoken discourse to a historical narrative has greatly puzzled the most eminent biblical scholars, some of whom reject the parenthesis as a manifest interpolation. But it is found in the most ancient Hebrew manuscripts, and, believing that all contained in this book was given by inspiration and is entitled to profound respect, we must…Read the comment
