Context of Zechariah 13:2
1“On that day a fountain will be opened for the dynasty of David and for the people of Jerusalem, a fountain to cleanse them from all their sins and impurity. “And on that day,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will erase idol worship throughout the land, so that even the names of the idols will be forgotten. I will remove from the land both the false prophets and the spirit of impurity that came with them. 3If anyone continues to prophesy, his own father and mother will tell him, ‘You must die, for you have prophesied lies in the name of the Lord.’ And as he prophesies, his own father and mother will stab him. 4“On that day people will be ashamed to claim the prophetic gift. No one will pretend to be a prophet by wearing prophet’s clothes.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2I will cut off the names of the idols - There shall not only be no idolatry, but the very names of the idols shall be forgotten, or be held in such abhorrence that no person shall mention them. This prophecy seems to be ancient, and to have been delivered while idolatry had prevalence in Israel and Judah. I will cause the prophets - All false teachers. And the unclean spirit - That which leads to impurity, the spirit of divination; the lust of the flesh…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2I will cut off the names of the idols - This had been a fence against idolatry. To name evil is a temptation to evil. Wrong words are the parents of wrong acts. To speak of evil awakens curiosity or passion; curiosity is one of the strongest incentives to act. All public mention of terrible crimes (it has been observed) produces imitation of the specific form of crime. Hence, it was commanded, “make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2By cleansing Israel, God would remove their past habit of idol worship, giving them a new heart to worship only God (Jeremiah 31:33; 32:38–40; Ezekiel 36:25–28). In biblical times, a person's name represented their existence. When people forget the names of idols, the idols no longer exist. False prophets misrepresented God by creating fake divine messages or speaking in the name of other gods (Deuteronomy 13:5–11; 18:17–22). They led Israel away from God…Read the comment
