Context of Psalms 1:1
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. 3They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

Commentaries on Psalms 1:1
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Blessed is the man - This Psalm has no title, and has been generally considered, but without especial reason, as a preface or introduction to the whole book. The word אשרי ashrey, which we translate blessed, is properly in the plural form, blessednesses, or may be considered as an exclamation produced by contemplating the state of the man who has taken God for his portion; O the blessedness of the man! And the word האיש haish, is emphatic: That man; that…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1Blessed is the man - That is, his condition is a happy or a desirable one. The word used here, אשׁר 'esher means properly, “happiness” or “blessedness.” It is found, however, only in the plural form and in the construct state, and takes the nature and force of an interjection - “ O the happiness of the man!” or “O happy man!” Deuteronomy 33:29: “happy art thou, O Israel!” 1 Kings 10:8: “happy are thy men, happy are these thy servants!” Job 5:17: “happy is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1David was the penman of most of the psalms, but some evidently were composed by other writers, and the writers of some are doubtful. But all were written by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost; and no part of the Old Testament is more frequently quoted or referred to in the New. Every psalm either points directly to Christ, in his person, his character, and offices; or may lead the believer's thoughts to Him. And the psalms are the language of the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1Psalms 1 and 8 form an inclusio (a literary pattern where the beginning and ending act like matching bookends). Together, they describe what God expects from the ideal person. These psalms compare the godly person with the wicked and praise the dignity and worth God gives to the godly (see Psalms 19; 33; 104; 145). Jesus the Messiah, introduced in Psalm 2, fully embodies this ideal. He is the Lord with complete power and authority, and the perfect example…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1The Hebrew title of this book is Tehilim ("praises" or "hymns"), for a leading feature in its contents is praise, though the word occurs in the title of only one Psalm (the hundred forty-fifth). The Greek title (in the Septuagint, a translation made two hundred years before Christ) is psalmoi, whence our word "Psalms." This corresponds to the Hebrew word mizmoi by which sixty-five Psalms are designated in their inscriptions, and which the Syriac, a…Read the comment
