Psalms 1:1-3

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Lt 276, 1904

19LtMs, Lt 276, 1904, par. 15

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” [Psalm 1:1.]

19LtMs, Lt 276, 1904, par. 17

Words were given me to bring before some that were in that meeting who were burning for a chance to condemn and to pass judgment upon others. There were two parties there, the godly and the ungodly. The words were spoken of some whom I shall not at this time name: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” [Verse 1.] The scornful were there, their spirit unsubdued, unhumbled. They had been walking contrary to God. The Lord had given them gracious words of encouragement, declaring that if they would take hold of His strength, they would make peace with Him. While they were sliding over the precipice into the black waters below, a hand was stretched out to save them and place them on vantage ground. This was the time for them to grasp the hand of the One who could have saved them if they had humbled their hearts before God. There was, I was shown, abundance for them to confess, in order to free their souls from guilt. But they chose to sit in the seat of the scornful. They decided that they would not improve the opportunity offered them. They left the meeting as they came, refusing the representation made me of what God would do for every soul. They took up their burden of sin, and carried it away with them, to continue to dishonor God and to rob their souls of the salvation Christ was waiting to bestow.

19LtMs, Lt 276, 1904, par. 19

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” [Verse 1.]

19LtMs, Lt 276, 1904, par. 20

Here is the description of another party: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water; that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” [Verses 2, 3.]

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

Lt 216, 1906

21LtMs, Lt 216, 1906, par. 13

The Psalmist wrote, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” [Psalm 1:1.]

21LtMs, Lt 216, 1906, par. 15

There were two parties present in the meeting. Of some whom I shall not at this time name, the words were spoken, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” [Verse 1.] The scornful were there, their spirit unsubdued, unhumbled. They were burning for a chance to condemn and to pass judgment upon others. They had been walking contrary to God. The Lord had given them gracious words of encouragement, declaring that if they would take hold of His strength, they would make peace with Him. Words were given me for these men. In vision I was permitted to see the very work that Christ was waiting to do for them. While they were sliding over the precipice into the black waters below, a hand was stretched out to save them and place them on vantage ground. This was the time for them to grasp the hand of Him who “is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.” [Hebrews 7:25.] Jesus could have saved them if they had humbled their hearts before God. There was, I was shown, an abundance for them to confess, in order to free their souls from guilt. But they chose to sit in the seat of the scornful. Rich blessings would have been bestowed upon them, had they improved the opportunity so graciously offered them. Very precious victories would then have been gained. But they did not improve the opportunity. They left the meeting less impressible than they were when they came. They refused to humble their proud hearts. They took up their burden of sin, and carried it away with them, to continue to dishonor God and to rob their souls of the salvation Christ was waiting to bestow.

21LtMs, Lt 216, 1906, par. 16

Here is the description of another party—one who will learn of Christ: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” [Psalm 1:2, 3.]

It is only as the law of God is restored to its rightful position that there can be a revival of primitive faith and godliness among His professed people. “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” Jeremiah 6:16.

Full and entire recognition of the ways and will of God will be revealed by implicit obedience to all the words that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. This is being doers of the word and [not] hearers only. One continued action of disobedience, however small you may regard it, clogs the channel of light and the bestowment of increased sacred gifts of God, and will result eventually in losing the precious evidences of His love we already have. The keeping of all the commandments of God, if we have the mind of Christ, will be the delight of the soul. We will exclaim with David, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night. YI October 20, 1886, par. 7

The lowliest service done for Jesus is the greatest honor mortals can enjoy. Angels, pure and holy, obey his word; and shall we be deceived and deluded into the service of Satan? Shall we refuse obedience to his requirements? Shall it not be said of us individually, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” Here the divine blessing is pronounced upon the obedient. Now see the denunciation against the disobedient: “The ungodly are not so; but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the Judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous; but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” Psalm 1.

Attended meeting in the forenoon. Brother Loughborough preached. It was an appropriate discourse. It enlightened my mind some concerning the message to the Laodiceans.62

J. N. Loughborough notes in his diary for May 14 that on this Sabbath morning “I spoke with much freedom from the 1st Ps. ‘Pay thy vows unto the Lord.’” It is likely that the article “Vows,” by Lougborough, appearing a few weeks later (June 16) in the Review, is a transcript or summary of his May 14 sermon, since it is prefaced by the same text from Psalm 1 and the content closely follows Ellen White’s description given in this diary entry.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. GW92 27.1

There is danger that ministers who profess to believe present truth will rest satisfied with presenting the theory only, while their own souls do not feel its sanctifying power. Some have not the love of God in the heart, softening, molding, and ennobling the life. The psalmist declares of the good man, “His delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Referring to his own experience, he exclaims, “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.” “Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.” [Psalm 1:2; 119:97, 148.]

Cultivate the habit of doing your best at whatever you undertake.
