Context of Joshua 13:12
10It also included all the towns of King Sihon of the Amorites, who had reigned in Heshbon, and extended as far as the borders of Ammon. 11It included Gilead, the territory of the kingdoms of Geshur and Maacah, all of Mount Hermon, all of Bashan as far as Salecah, and all the territory of King Og of Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei. King Og was the last of the Rephaites, for Moses had attacked them and driven them out. 13But the Israelites failed to drive out the people of Geshur and Maacah, so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day. 14Moses did not assign any allotment of land to the tribe of Levi. Instead, as the Lord had promised them, their allotment came from the offerings burned on the altar to the Lord, the God of Israel.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8-33Verses 8-33 The writer appends to the command of God Joshua 13:1-7 a statement that the other two tribes and a half had already had their inheritance marked out for them by Moses in the land east of Jordan. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-33Verses 7-33 The land must be divided among the tribes. It is the will of God that every man should know his own, and not take that which is another's. The world must be governed, not by force, but right. Wherever our habitation is placed, and in whatever honest way our portion is assigned, we should consider them as allotted of God; we should be thankful for, and use them as such, while every prudent method should be used to prevent disputes about…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-14Half the tribe of Manasseh and the tribes of Reuben and Gad asked Moses for land on the east side of the Jordan. This land was once the kingdoms of Sihon and Og (Numbers 21:21–35; 32:1–42). In return, they helped the rest of Israel claim their land west of the Jordan (Joshua 1:12–18; 4:12–13). Here, the author confirmed their ownership of these lands.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-331. Now Joshua was old and stricken in years--He was probably above a hundred years old; for the conquest and survey of the land occupied about seven years, the partition one; and he died at the age of one hundred ten years (Jos 24:29). The distribution, as well as the conquest of the land, was included in the mission of Joshua; and his advanced age supplied a special reason for entering on the immediate discharge of that duty; namely, of allocating Canaan…Read the comment
