Context of Ezekiel 39:18
16(There will be a town there named Hamonah, which means ‘horde.’) And so the land will finally be cleansed. 17“And now, son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call all the birds and wild animals. Say to them: Gather together for my great sacrificial feast. Come from far and near to the mountains of Israel, and there eat flesh and drink blood! Eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of princes as though they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls—all fattened animals from Bashan! 19Gorge yourselves with flesh until you are glutted; drink blood until you are drunk. This is the sacrificial feast I have prepared for you. 20Feast at my banquet table—feast on horses and charioteers, on mighty men and all kinds of valiant warriors, says the Sovereign Lord.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 39:18
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Ye shall - drink the blood of the princes of the earth - I need not mention the custom of the Scandinavians: they were accustomed to drink the blood of their enemies out of the skulls of the dead. But this is spoken of fowls and beasts here - rams, lambs, and goats. The feast shall be as grateful and as plenteous to the fowls and beasts, as one made of the above animals, the fattest and best of their kind, (because fed in the fertile fields of Bashan)…Read the comment

His judgments were the consequence of their sins; and these sins once abandoned, the favor of their God will return in yet more abundance. Ezekiel 39:29 Compare Acts 2:17. Peter distinctly appropriates these prophecies (marginal references) to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, and the inauguration of the Church of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-22Verses 11-22 How numerous the enemies which God destroyed for the defence of his people Israel! Times of great deliverances should be times of reformation. Every one should help the utmost he can, toward cleansing the land from reproach. Sin is an enemy every man should strive against. Those engaged in public work, especially of cleansing and reforming a land, ought to be men who will go through with what they undertake, who will be always employed. When…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-20In most sacrificial feasts, people eat animals that have been offered as sacrifices. In this feast, the situation is reversed. Animals would eat the bodies of defeated enemies, as if they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls. This scene is the opposite of the great banquet described in Isaiah 25:6. In that future feast, God’s people are invited to celebrate. Here, God’s enemies become the meal instead of the guests.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. rams ... lambs ... goats--By these various animal victims used in sacrifices are meant various ranks of men, princes, generals, and soldiers (compare Is 34:6). fatlings of Bashan--ungodly men of might (Psa 22:12). Bashan, beyond Jordan, was famed for its fat cattle. Fat implies prosperity which often makes men refractory towards God (De 32:14, 15).Read the comment
