Ezekiel 38:8
8A long time from now you will be called into action. In the distant future you will swoop down on the land of Israel, which will be enjoying peace after recovering from war and after its people have returned from many lands to the mountains of Israel.
Ezekiel 38:8 in other versions
- King James Version (KJV)After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
- New International Version (NIV)After many days you will be called to arms. - English Standard Version (ESV)After many days you will be mustered. Its people were brought out from the peoples and now dwell securely, all of them.
- New King James Version (NKJV)After many days you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely.
Context of Ezekiel 38:8
6Gomer and all its armies will also join you, along with the armies of Beth-togarmah from the distant north, and many others. 7“Get ready; be prepared! Keep all the armies around you mobilized, and take command of them. A long time from now you will be called into action. In the distant future you will swoop down on the land of Israel, which will be enjoying peace after recovering from war and after its people have returned from many lands to the mountains of Israel. 9You and all your allies—a vast and awesome army—will roll down on them like a storm and cover the land like a cloud. 10“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: At that time evil thoughts will come to your mind, and you will devise a wicked scheme.

It would come before a lasting time of peace. Some people believe this battle will be a real event at the end of history. Others believe it is a symbolic picture (a literary image) that shows how the Lord protects his people in every age. In this view, the battle represents the ongoing…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. thou shall be visited--in wrath, by God (Is 29:6). Probably there is allusion to Is 24:21, 22, "The host of the high ones ... shall be gathered ... as prisoners ... in the pit ... and after many days shall they be visited." I therefore prefer English Version to Grotius rendering, "Thou shalt get the command" of the expedition. The "after many days" is defined by "in the latter years," that is, in the times just before the coming of Messiah, namely…Read the comment
