Context of Ezekiel 37:22
20“Then hold out the pieces of wood you have inscribed, so the people can see them. 21And give them this message from the Sovereign Lord: I will gather the people of Israel from among the nations. I will bring them home to their own land from the places where they have been scattered. I will unify them into one nation on the mountains of Israel. One king will rule them all; no longer will they be divided into two nations or into two kingdoms. 23They will never again pollute themselves with their idols and vile images and rebellion, for I will save them from their sinful apostasy. I will cleanse them. Then they will truly be my people, and I will be their God. 24“My servant David will be their king, and they will have only one shepherd. They will obey my regulations and be careful to keep my decrees.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22I will make them one nation - There was no distinction after the return from Babylon. And one king shall be king to them all - Politically speaking they never had a king from that day to this; and the grand junction and government spoken of here must refer to another time - to that in which they shall be brought into the Christian Church with the fullness of the Gentiles; when Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, shall rule over all.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-28Verses 15-28 This emblem was to show the people, that the Lord would unite Judah and Israel. Christ is the true David, Israel's King of old; and those whom he makes willing in the day of his power, he makes to walk in his judgments, and to keep his statutes. Events yet to come will further explain this prophecy. Nothing has more hindered the success of the gospel than divisions. Let us study to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace; let us…Read the comment

In the past, King Rehoboam’s harsh and unfaithful leadership divided the nation (1 Kings 12). Now God would give his people one servant leader, a shepherd king. Like David, this king would unite the tribes. The restored people would also be made clean again. God would remove their idols and other sinful practices. The Lord would once again be…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2222. one nation--(Is 11:13; Jr 3:18; Ho 1:11). one king--not Zerubbabel, who was not a king either in fact or name, and who ruled over but a few Jews, and that only for a few years; whereas the King here reigns for ever. Messiah is meant (Eze 34:23, 24). The union of Judah and Israel under King Messiah symbolizes the union of Jews and Gentiles under Him, partly now, perfectly hereafter (Eze 37:24; Joh 10:16).Read the comment
