14These are the ancestors of some of the clans of Israel: The sons of Reuben, Israel’s oldest son, were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. Their descendants became the clans of Reuben. 15The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul. (Shaul’s mother was a Canaanite woman.) Their descendants became the clans of Simeon. These are the descendants of Levi, as listed in their family records: The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. (Levi lived to be 137 years old.) 17The descendants of Gershon included Libni and Shimei, each of whom became the ancestor of a clan. 18The descendants of Kohath included Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. (Kohath lived to be 133 years old.)

Commentaries on Exodus 6:16
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16The years of the life of Levi - "Bishop Patrick observes that Levi is thought to have lived the longest of all Jacob's sons, none of whose ages are recorded in Scripture but his and Joseph's, whom Levi survived twenty-seven years, though he was much the elder brother. By the common computation this would be twenty-three years: by Kennicott's computation at the end of Genesis 31. (See Clarke's note at Genesis 31:55;) Levi's birth is placed twenty-four…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 Moses and Aaron were Israelites; raised up unto them of their brethren, as Christ also should be, who was to be the Prophet and Priest, the Redeemer and Lawgiver of the people of Israel. Moses returns to his narrative, and repeats the charge God had given him to deliver his message to Pharaoh, and his objection against it. Those who have spoken unadvisedly with their lips ought to reflect upon it with regret, as Moses seems to do here…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-16The list of ancestors moves step by step through Jacob’s sons. It begins with the first son, then the second, and then the third, Levi. Levi was the ancestor of Moses and Aaron. After reaching Levi, the list of ancestors does not continue with the other nine sons. Instead, it focuses on Levi’s family line. This focus prepares the reader to understand the role of Moses and Aaron in God’s plan.Read the comment

Both of them were commissioned to act so important a part in the events transacted in the court of Egypt and afterwards elevated to so high offices in the government and Church of God, that it was of the utmost importance that their…Read the comment
