Context of 2 Samuel 8:6
4David captured 1,000 chariots, 7,000 charioteers, and 20,000 foot soldiers. He crippled all the chariot horses except enough for 100 chariots. 5When Arameans from Damascus arrived to help King Hadadezer, David killed 22,000 of them. Then he placed several army garrisons in Damascus, the Aramean capital, and the Arameans became David’s subjects and paid him tribute money. So the Lord made David victorious wherever he went. 7David brought the gold shields of Hadadezer’s officers to Jerusalem, 8along with a large amount of bronze from Hadadezer’s towns of Tebah and Berothai.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Garrisons - The word is used for officers in 1 Kings 4:5, 1 Kings 4:19, and some think that that is its meaning here. Perhaps, however, it is best to take it with the King James Version in the same sense as in 1 Samuel 10:5; 1 Samuel 13:3. Brought gifts - Rather, “tribute” (and in 2 Samuel 8:2); meaning they became subject and tributary.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6Garrisons were groups of soldiers placed in a territory to keep control and prevent rebellion. David placed army garrisons in Aram, but not in Moab (2 Samuel 8:2). This difference suggests that Aram was a stronger and more dangerous enemy. David needed a military presence there in order to keep control. the LORD made David victorious: See 2 Samuel 8:14. God was the true source of David’s success and growing power.Read the comment
