Context of 2 Samuel 8:6
4David took 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers from him. David also disabled all but 100 of their horses so that they couldn’t pull chariots. 5When the Arameans from Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, David killed 22,000 of them. David put troops in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became his subjects and paid taxes ⌞to him⌟. Everywhere David went, the Lord gave him victories. 7David took the gold shields that belonged to Hadadezer’s servants, and he brought them to Jerusalem. 8King David also took a large quantity of bronze from Betah and Berothai, Hadadezer’s cities.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Garrisons - The word is used for officers in 1 Kings 4:5, 1 Kings 4:19, and some think that that is its meaning here. Perhaps, however, it is best to take it with the King James Version in the same sense as in 1 Samuel 10:5; 1 Samuel 13:3. Brought gifts - Rather, “tribute” (and in 2 Samuel 8:2); meaning they became subject and tributary.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6Garrisons were groups of soldiers placed in a territory to keep control and prevent rebellion. David placed army garrisons in Aram, but not in Moab (2 Samuel 8:2). This difference suggests that Aram was a stronger and more dangerous enemy. David needed a military presence there in order to keep control. the LORD made David victorious: See 2 Samuel 8:14. God was the true source of David’s success and growing power.Read the comment
